MOST STONE NAMES ARE LINKSAFRICAN JADETrue jade is either jadeite or nephrite (nephrite is stronger). Green jade promotes that kind of strength. It offers physical and emotional well-being, especially during unpleasant or difficult situations by helping us feel more grounded. Lush shades of avocado green swirl through these beads, which are the color of nephrite jade with more opacity. The Chinese have worn jade for over five thousand years. When handled, jade supposedly passes some of its subtle virtues on to its owner. Chinese poets called it the "concentrated essence of love." Throughout their history, the Chinese prized nephrite rather than jadeite (both called jade). However, when a source of brilliant emerald green jadeite (imperial jade) was discovered during the 18th century, it was highly coveted and it is from this jadeite that the most expensive jade beads and jewelry are made. Grossular is a mineral species of the garnet group. Grossular garnet also has another gem form, that, like jade, is used in carvings and sculptures. This massive, compact variety is usually called African Jade, Garnet Jade or Transvaal Jade. This stone is usually green, but is sometimes multicolored pink and green. It was often mistaken for jade in the ancient oriental jade market.
