Hook and Eye Clasp

The only supplies necessary for this hook is about 3.5 inches of round 18 gauge wire.  You can use either copper, sterling silver, gold-filled, or gold wire. It's your choice.

The tools you’ll need are:

  • wire cutters
  • jeweler files
  • ruler
  • round nosed pliers
  • flat nosed pliers
1. First we'll make the hook part. Cut off approx. 2 inches of wire and file both ends smooth.

2. Using your round nosed pliers, make the smallest possible curl on one end of the wire. Then use your flat nosed pliers to flatten the curl.

3. Now use your round nosed pliers and make a larger loop on the opposite end of the wire. Your loops on the wire should face in opposite directions also, one on top and one on bottom.

4. The next step is to bend your wire into a hook. Using your round nosed pliers, place them a little higher than half way on the wire so that the small loop is at the top and the larger loop is at the bottom. The smaller loop should be facing away from you. Bend the wire away from you so that it forms a hook. You've finished the hook part of the clasp.

5. The eye is the other part of the clasp. Cut off approx. 1.5 inches of your wire and file both ends.

6. Use your round nose pliers and make a loop as you did in step 3 above.

7. Do the same on the other end of the wire, but this time the loop should be facing in the other direction so you make a figure eight (8).

8. To add the clasp to your beaded item, just hook the clam shell (clamp on) onto the looped part of either the hook or eye. To add it to a wire project or necklace finished off with a crimp bead, just open the loop a little and hook it over the end of your wire piece and close the loop again using your flat nosed pliers.
