Acrylic - Lucite Beads
Acrylic beads are light-weight, inexpensive and can be worked by relatively unskilled labor into a variety of shapes and designs. The thermoset plastics (Bakelite and phenolic resins) were used for making beads that imitated ivory, jet and amber: Hard plastics, they could be cast and then cut and carved like gems. As each bead was made separately; it was possible to give each an individual design. It was, however; when fashion designers (such as Coco Chanel) draped necklaces of glass beads and artificial pearls around haute conture outfits that costume jewelry became truly acceptable.
