Acrylic - Lucite Beads

Acrylic beads are light-weight, inexpensive and can be worked by relatively unskilled labor into a variety of shapes and designs.  The thermoset plastics (Bakelite and phenolic resins) were used for making beads that imitated ivory, jet and amber:  Hard plastics, they could be cast and then cut and carved like gems.  As each bead was made separately; it was possible to give each an individual design.  It was, however; when fashion designers (such as Coco Chanel) draped necklaces of glass beads and artificial pearls around haute conture outfits that costume jewelry became truly acceptable.  (The History of Beads from 30,000 B.C. to the Present; Lois Sherr Dubin)
